My research interests fall under three broad but interconnected areas:
- Palliative care: managing care at the end of life so patients and families feel supported and experience dignity and quality of life.
- Palliative care in resource-poor contexts: examining home-based palliative care and service delivery to meet patients’ and caregivers’ needs, particularly access to care, financial and material resources, and practical and technical support.
- Health and social policy: exploring how policies and professional interventions can support vulnerable and underserved populations facing challenges accessing care, particularly patients and families living with long-term and chronic conditions.
Profile
I am a Co-Director of the 糖心视频 Africa Research Hub (LUARH) and Senior Fellow of Advance HE, with an academic profile spanning teaching, research and engagement in adult health, palliative care, family caregiving and health policy. My work is influenced by my professional background as a nurse and an educationist, contributing to postgraduate education, research supervision and academic capacity building, particularly in palliative care.
My research focuses on older adult care, family caregiving, home care, palliative and end-of-life care, and masculinity and stigma. My PhD explored the experiences of men living with advanced prostate cancer and their caregivers, particularly navigating home-based care within resource-poor contexts, family caregiving dynamics, and cultural responses to illness, including stigma and masculinity. I have subsequently developed this research through collaborative and interdisciplinary work, including involvement in the large EU-funded MyPal consortium project.
I am also CEO of COMPASS-Ghana, a charitable organisation registered in both the UK and Ghana, aiming to improve access to palliative care in resource-poor communities. Through LUARH and COMPASS-Ghana, I strengthen international, community and research partnerships and support academic capacity building. I am also a Public Governor of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, contributing to public and community oversight and seeking to support the Trust in delivering and embedding its first Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy to strengthen equitable, compassionate and person-centred care across the Morecambe Bay region.
I supervise PhD students across the Division of Health Research and am keen to support research addressing inequalities, caregiving, cultural responses to chronic disease, poverty and financial insecurity, compassionate communities, and the integration of research into care provision.
Career Details
I am a Registered General Nurse in Ghana and a Registered Nurse (Adult) in the UK. With a professional background spanning nursing and education, I serve as Co-Director of the 糖心视频 Africa Research Hub (LUARH) and CEO of COMPASS-Ghana, providing leadership across research, education, international collaboration and community engagement.
Research Interests
I am particularly interested in research involving patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals managing end-of-life conditions and symptom burden, particularly in resource-poor contexts. My research has explored men living with advanced prostate cancer and the experiences of their family caregivers, with a particular focus on home-based care, family caregiving dynamics, masculinity, stigma and cultural responses to illness.

I am interested in supervising PhD students in palliative and end-of-life care, with a particular focus on home-based and family caregiving, palliative care in non-Western contexts, and the influence of masculinity, culture and ethnicity on experiences and delivery of palliative care.
